Types of Hiking

* Backpacking
Backpacking (in US; tramping, trekking, or bushwalking in other countries) combines hiking and camping in a single trip. A backpacker hikes into the backcountry to spend one or more nights there, and carries supplies and equipment to satisfy sleeping and eating needs.

* Dog Hiking
Dog hiking refers to a form of hiking in which dogs travel alongside their owners. Several companies manufacture packs (often similar in appearance to mule or donkey side bags) in various sizes, so that the dogs may carry their own food and/or bowls. If the dog is employed to carry food or supplies belonging to the human hikers, it is referred to as a storage dog, (not to be confused with a guide dog or service dog).

* Freehiking
Freehiking means to hike in the nude. The term is also less frequently applied to a form of hiking in which the participants intentionally avoid trails and predetermined destinations.

* Hillwalking
In Britain, the term hillwalking or fellwalking is normally used to describe the recreational practice of walking in hilly or mountainous terrain, generally with the intention of visiting the tops of hills and mountains.

The term hillwalking is used to describe activities which might be referred to as hiking, backpacking or mountaineering elsewhere, with the term hills being understood generally to include mountains, as these are referred to specifically using the term "mountaineering" only in specific circumstances.

Fellwalking is particularly used to refer to hill or mountain walks in the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales in Northern England as fell is the preferred term for both features in those parts of England.

* Llama hiking
Llamas have been used by people of the Andes mountains as pack animals for hundreds of years. Recently, it has become popular to use llamas as pack animals while hiking. Llamas with their padded feet (like dogs') easily handle steep and rocky paths and are much more environmentally friendly to the ground than horses' hooves. A llama can carry about 25% of its body weight with no problem. This means an average animal of 300 pounds can carry around 75 pounds of equipment in its packs. By contrast, an average human could only handle about ten to fifteen pounds, even on a level surface for any duration.

* Scrambling
Scrambling (also known as alpine scrambling) is a method of ascending rocky faces and ridges. It is an ambiguous term that lies somewhere between hillwalking and rock climbing. It is often distinguished from hillwalking by defining a scramble as a route where hands must be used in the ascent. There is less to distinguish it from climbing, with many easy climbs sometimes referred to as difficult scrambles. A distinction can be made in defining any ascent where hands are used to hold body weight, rather than just for balance, as a climb.

* Thru-hiking

Thru-hiking is the process of hiking a long-distance trail from end to end. The term is most commonly associated with the Appalachian Trail, but is also used for other lengthy trails and long distance hikes, including the Pacific Crest Trail and the Continental Divide Trail. Thru-hiking is also called "end-to-end hiking" or "end-to-ending" on some trails, like Vermont's Long Trail. Section hiking, on the other hand, refers to hiking a complete trail by hiking all of its individual sections, not in continuity or, necessarily, in sequence.

* Ultralight Backpacking
Ultralight backpacking is an advanced style of backpacking that emphasizes packing (carrying) the lightest weight and most simple kit safely possible for a given trip. To reach this goal, base pack weight (the weight of a backpack plus the gear inside— excluding consumables such as food, water, and fuel, which vary depending on the duration and style of trip) is reduced as much as safely possible, though reduction of the weight of consumables is also applied.

* Waterfalling
A waterfall is a place where flowing water rapidly drops in elevation as it flows over a steep region or a cliff.

* Dayhiking
A dayhike is a hike that can be completed within 1 day (a hike that does not require camping out overnight).

* Heli Hiking
Heli Hiking is a recreational activity in which a helicopter is used to access remote areas of the back country for hiking that would not normally be accessible.

* Bushwhacking
A North American term for hikers and cross-country skiers who make their own trails.

Travel Quotes:

We all become great explorers during our first few days in a new city, or a new love affair. Mignon McLaughlin

When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable. Clifton Fadiman

Pulutan Philippines Cuisine

Pulutan (from the Filipino word pulutin which literally means "something that is picked up") is a term roughly analogous to the English term "finger food". Originally, it was a snack accompanied with liquor or beer but has found its way into Philippine cuisine as appetizers or, in some cases, main dishes, as in the case of sisig.
